Infectious energy, raw honesty, and musical freshness are three things you immediately notice about Leaving Thomas, a Calgary-based contemporary country pop duo. Comprised of singers/songwriters (and best friends) Annika Odegard and Bryton Udy, Leaving Thomas’ dedication to the genre lies in their strong songwriting, emotional performances, and energetic spirit.
Rooted in personal experience, their first single “Waiting Kind Of Girl” (released to radio on December 25, 2016), is a melodically vibrant anthem dedicated to anyone who has struggled with a relationship, fruitlessly waiting on commitment from a loved one.
Their inspiration is fuelled by many streams — musically, Leaving Thomas draws from a range of fellow artists, and personal favourites from Keith Urban and Shania Twain, to Stevie Wonder. Lyrically, they let their personal experiences guide their stories. Shares Odegard, "It’s always a very organic, natural process when we write together, and each song is close to our hearts because of the personal connection we have to each one."
Much like their musical career, their personal connection has also started off as a whimsical journey. Both heavily involved with music from a young age, Odegard and Udy first met as part of the children’s chorus in a local production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. They reconnected 10 years later at the 2012 Calgary Stampede Talent Search, where Odegard won the grand prize, and Udy was crowned as "Most Promising Performer." A deep friendship formed, and following brief, independent solo endeavors, the "BFF's" solid friendship later evolved into a creative musical collaboration. The distinctive name Leaving Thomas, comes from a witty merger of the duo’s middle names.
The last thing this duo knows how to do is sit still. With an official musical kick off in January of 2016, Leaving Thomas has already performed throughout Calgary and surrounding area, opening for such acts as Colt Ford and Andi Case. They also released an acoustic EP album titled The Ground Floor in January 2016.
Both Calgary natives of European heritage (Norwegian for Odegard and British for Udy), in their spare time Leaving Thomas is all about valuing time spent with family and loved ones, investing in new experiences, and exploring new ways for personal growth.
