The Higgins bring something rare to the table – a vocal blend and a musical connection that’s bred in the bone, and nurtured over a time period that’s twice as long as the life expectancy of most bands. While the Higgins may be dreamers, they have a fair bit of real world success to feed their dreams: All three singles from their 2008 debut, Real Thing, made a significant dent on the Canadian Country Music charts and each hit No.3 on CMT’s Chevy Cross Canada Countdown. In addition to nominations for both CRMA and Indie awards, The Higgins were nominated for multiple Canadian Country Music Awards in 2009, including Roots Artist of the Year and Group or Duo of the Year. They also took home a total of nine BC Country Music Awards over 2008-09.

So far the response to Dreamers Like Us’ upbeat lead single ‘Free Like Love’ indicates the Delta, BC trio can dream even bigger in 2010 – ‘Free Like Love’ went straight into heavy rotation on CMT and was the No.1 most added song on Canadian Country radio during the first week of February 2010.

Most of the record is co-written by Kathleen, with a variety of songwriters – Kelly Archer, Deric Ruttan, Kaci Bolls, Byron Hill (Ray Charles, Anne Murray, George Jones), Pam Rose (Martina McBride, Reba and Emmylou Harris), and Grammy Award winning songwriter Liz Rose (Taylor Swift). “Every song is written in the moment, from a specific emotion,” says Kathleen.

“We’re inspired by imperfection,” John Higgins says. “Being a family people kind of expect a united front. At times it’s like mixing fire and gasoline.”

“Oh yeah,” Kathleen puts in. “There’s no denying it. We’re all very Irish and very fiery, but that drives the music. That’s the passion we put into everything we do. We always know, at the end of the day, we love each other unconditionally,”

You can hear that passion loud and clear on stage and on record. Eilleen’s voice alternately soaring in the rafters and trading off leads with Kathleen with John adding “the ‘velvet’ in the mix”. The result is a signature blend of vocals and a trademark musical combination of Country and Roots.

Refreshingly, this is an act that doesn’t need massive production to bludgeon a positive response out of their growing audience. While some artists seem intent on molding their personal story into what they think their audience wants to see and hear, as if practicing being themselves, The Higgins just do what comes naturally.
