Biography

Hey Romeo is Stacie Roper (vocals), Rob Shapiro (keys) and Darren Gusnowsky (guitar). This dynamic country trio from Edmonton, Alberta has chalked up more than 700 shows since forming in 2002. The band has opened for many acts including Sugarland, Blue Rodeo, Darius Rucker, Lonestar, Emerson Drive, Johnny Reid, Joe Diffie and the Kentucky Headhunters.

Members of Hey Romeo, while performing with other projects, were each well-respected musicians within Edmonton’s music community, when they decided to work together in 2002. The hook-up came when Stacie went to see Canadian country singer Gord Bamford perform and was drawn to the quality musicianship of Rob and Darren. She talked Bamford into letting her onstage to sing a couple of songs with his band, and the three became instantly close friends. Within a month, Stacie, Rob and Darren had played their first show together. From the first rehearsal a collective chemistry between the three was unmistakable. In time, they were able to develop their own sound and group identity, which formed Hey Romeo. While Rob handles much of the band’s day-to-day business, all three members contribute skillful songwriting to the group.

In early 2009 and throughout the summer months Hey Romeo played to sold out shows in Western Canada. Continuing on their success from the beginning of the year, the band was nominated for Canadian Country Music Association "Group of the Year" and keyboardist Rob Shapiro won CCMA “Keyboard Player of the Year”. The band looks forward to taking their music across Canada in the New Year.

In 2008, the band was honored to win the award for CCMA "Top New Group". Hey Romeo was also grateful to be nominated for a Western Canadian Music Award (WCMA) for Outstanding Country Recording, the CRMA "Country Category, CCMA Rising Star, Canadian Radio Music Awards at Canadian Music Week for, “Best New Group or Solo Artist” (Country) of the Year“ for their rendition of the Fleetwood Mac hit, “Second Hand News”, from their self titled debut album. Their debut album also yielded two other singles, which have received airplay nationally. “Sorry That You’re Leavin’” and “Weathered Names”.

It’s been an exciting and busy year for Hey Romeo. In January they completed a tour of the western Canada and Ontario with Deric Ruttan. The first single, “Searchin’ for You” is climbing the charts, as the band is preparing for the release of their new CD, produced by CCMA “Producer of the Year”, Byron Hill (Gary Allan, Kathy Mattea, Gord Bamford). Look out for the new album entitled, “That’s What I Am” in stores in May, 2010!!!

With their audience growing and new release underway its full speed ahead.
