Biography
Gary Helms grew up interested in music; he also counts Merle Haggard, George Strait, Tommy Duncan, and Bob Wills among his early inspirations.
Raised by his grandparents, he was raised in a Christian country home.
Growing up about twenty miles southeast of Houston, Texas in a small town called North Shore. While attending North Shore high school, the young long-haired singer continued to pursue his interest in music and fronted Black Star; a popular local band that played rock clubs on the weekends.
As few year’s later Gary moved to Deer Park, Texas; during this period and he and a friend managed to put together what would later become one of the regions hottest bands.
He nearly gave up music when he got married and had a son however, in the mean time he would attend college at San Jacinto College Central and later move on to the University of Houston as part of his back-up plan.
As Gary won over new audiences on his first single with the TBG, "In My Mind," and later again with another song that he had written called "Daddy Don’t Leave" which was penned in relation to his son. The band's style had changed dramatically, and as Gary began to garner radio airplay and media buzz over "In My Mind," Gary Helms and "TBG" better known, as Texas Black Gold was quickly becoming a household name.
As the unmistakable voice of "TBG" Texas Black Gold throughout his time with the band Gary’s trademark vocals, and demanding stage performances acquired a few endorsements for the band as well as Gary. The cowboy hat also made him stand out amongst other performers. The Resistol hat, which happened to be the 20x brand, was called the Black Gold hat and is where the band acquired their name.
In 2007 Gary released his first video "Another Perfect Day" on TBG Entertainment to television channels CMT, GAC, CMT Canada, CMC Australia and XYZ. A new video is currently being scripted for his second coming effort and will be serviced to television in late 2010.
